The Public Service Penalty - Social Security Offsets
Petition to Repeal Public Service Penalty Laws
Did you know that Missouri teachers and other public service employees like police and firefighters, under current law, are not allowed to receive their fully earned social security benefits upon retirement?
The Government Pension Offset (GPO) and Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) actually penalize people who have dedicated their lives to public service by taking away benefits they have earned. Individuals lose an average of $3,600 a year due to GPO. Nine out of ten public employees affected by GPO lose the entire spousal benefit, even though their spouse paid Social Security taxes for many years. The WEP causes hard-working people to lose a significant portion of the benefits they earned themselves.
Petitions are being sent to SNEA building reps across the district to let our representatives in Congress know that teachers strongly support the repeal of GPO and WEP.
